Week 1: Review of Past 505 Reports
Assignment #2: Review (3) Past 505 Reports
Professor Gomes provided us with a folder of around 40 project reports from past students in his class to get us acquainted with the expectations and delivery that will be expected of us. We were instructed to pick three reports and review and evaluate the following sections of each report: (1) statement of the problem, (2) procedure, (3) hypothesis, (4) major findings, (5) conclusion, (6) appendix materials, and to provide an overall critique of each project.
Summary
It was fascinating to see the wide range of problems students have tackled with their senior design research projects considering that SF State's School of Design caters to both industrial designers and visual designers. A major takeaway was seeing how one's initial design solution can evolve throughout the research process. For example, the project "MakerHub" began with the student's desire to design a solution for the organization of the MakerSpace in our library. His concern was that the provided space was inefficient for group work and collaboration. However as his research unfolded, he decided to change directions and design a product that would make collaboration and sharing easier among group partners.
